When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer

Planning your wedding is such an exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) adventure, and one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is choosing the right photographer. After all, your photos are the one thing that lasts long after the cake is gone and the flowers have wilted.

So when’s the best time to book your wedding photographer?
Spoiler alert: it’s sooner than you think.

The Sweet Spot: 9–18 Months Before Your Wedding

Most photographers, especially those who specialize in weddings, book up quickly—sometimes over a year in advance. Popular months (spring and fall) and Saturdays go the fastest. If you have your heart set on a particular photographer, booking them 12+ months out is the safest bet.

Why Booking Early Matters

  • Peace of Mind
Once your photographer is locked in, you can check a huge task off your planning list and breathe easier knowing you’ve secured someone you love.
  • Better Planning
A great photographer doesn’t just show up on your wedding day—they help you plan your timeline, suggest engagement session ideas, and get to know your unique vision. Booking early gives you time to build that relationship. I also love to send a welcome packet to all potential brides that has helpful planning tips, checklists, and more!
  • Engagement Session Perks
Many photographers include or offer an engagement session. Booking early means you can schedule this during your favorite season (and even use the photos for your save-the-dates). I personally offer a complimentary engagement session with every wedding package I offer.
  • Your Dream Vendor Team
If you’re drawn to a specific style of photography, chances are you’ll vibe with other vendors they’ve worked with too (planners, florists, venues). Booking early helps you tap into their trusted network while those vendors still have availability. This includes my trusted sidekicks (second shooters and assistants).
  • Locking in Pricing
Wedding photographer pricing often increases year to year. Booking early usually means you’re locking in current rates before they rise.

If you’re less than 6–9 months away from your wedding, don’t panic—it’s still worth reaching out! Some photographers may have cancellations or weekday availability. Just know your options may be more limited. There have been plenty of times when I have been able to squeeze in a wedding even just weeks before the couples date.

Your wedding photos are the heirlooms that tell your love story for generations. Booking your photographer early ensures you don’t just get “someone”—you get the right someone who makes you feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated. Anddd if that someone just so happens to be me, I look forward to chatting with you!
